From Tennis to Padel: What Transfers, What Doesn't, What to Buy

Half the new players on UAE courts are tennis converts. The good news: your hands, reading of the ball, and net instincts transfer beautifully. The bad news: three tennis habits will cap your padel level until you unlearn them.

What transfers

Volleys (your biggest head start), split-step timing, competitive instincts, and general racket-head control. Tennis players usually reach “rallying respectably” in two or three sessions.

What doesn't

The big swing. Padel walls punish full tennis groundstrokes — compact blocks and redirects win here. Running around the ball. In padel the wall is your friend; turning and letting the ball come off the glass feels wrong for a month, then becomes your favourite shot. The flat bomb serve. Underarm serves reward placement and spin, not power. Your ego will adjust.

The racket mistake every tennis player makes

You're used to advanced tennis frames, so you buy an advanced padel frame — hard 18K diamond, head-heavy. Wrong tool for your actual padel level. Padel technique — especially the bandeja — is new to your arm; a forgiving frame accelerates learning and protects an elbow that's about to meet a lot of new movement patterns. Start with a round or teardrop, medium core: the Arrow Hit Control, Ionic Control or Blade Elite (Wilson feel, if you're loyal to the brand). Coming from serious tennis with a fast swing? The Coello Team gives you room to grow into. Six months in, read our level guide and upgrade with data.

One month in, you'll know

Padel's rallies are longer, the geometry is chess-like, and the social side is real — there's a reason courts here are booked at midnight.
