Start with an honest level check

Beginner (0–1 year, learning positioning): You need forgiveness, not power. That means a round shape — sweet spot dead centre, so your off-centre hits still go where you aimed. Soft-to-medium foam (EVA soft or FOAM) so the ball rebounds without you generating perfect technique. Weight around 350–365g. Fibreglass face is fine; you don't need carbon yet.

Intermediate: the upgrade point most people miss

You're intermediate when you're consistently rallying, using the walls, and starting to attack at the net. This is where a teardrop shape earns its place — the sweet spot moves slightly up the face, giving you power on smashes without losing the control you rely on for the other 80% of points.

Advanced: now the diamond makes sense

If you're playing competitive matches, finishing points overhead, and your technique generates its own margin for error — now the diamond shape pays you back. High balance, top-loaded weight, hard EVA, 18K carbon: maximum power and feedback, minimum forgiveness.

The three specs that actually matter

Shape decides where the sweet spot sits: round = control and forgiveness, teardrop = balanced, diamond = power. Foam density decides feel: softer rebounds more easily and is kinder to your arm; harder gives more power at speed — but only if you supply the speed. Weight and balance decide manoeuvrability: heavier and head-heavy adds punch but tires the shoulder and slows your hands at the net.

A word on your arm

If you've felt elbow or wrist pain, don't play through it with a hard, head-heavy racket — that's how a niggle becomes three months off court.
